One of my favorite vintage looks is the classic pinup girl. This trend spanned many decades but my favorite are the beauties of the 1940's. As old things are new again, I pick up trends from long ago styles that still hold up today.
When I think of the '40s, the star that comes to mind is Veronica Lake. Her iconic peek-a-boo hairstyle to her mysterious film noir image she made famous. Many celebrities today are inspired by pinup looks. Christina Aguilera is a great example of how vintage is new again. Her dramatic crimson lips can be elegant and not contrived, when combined with flawless skin and a class vintage eye design. Below are some tips on how to achieve a pinup style:
Makeup
- Not all pinup lips need to be red like Christina Aguilera's, try a pale soft pink or even a peachy tone. If you choose a red warm brick reds or a true red work best. Make sure lips are well lined to define their shape.
- Eye shadows from this period include light bone, vanilla, cream colors that are washed on the eye from eyelash to brow bone. Blend a darker brown, gray, or charcoal color in the crease for definition.
- Eyeliner for this style is very important. Many like to use liquid liners but I tend to go with a gel liner from Bobbi Brown or Mac's Fluidline. Line the upper lash line starting from the inner eye to the outer portion. Transition the liner to be thicker as you get farther out. Wing the liner in an upward motion making sure not to extend it too far out, as this is more of a 1960's Amy Winehouse look. Line the lower lash line using a pencil to create a soft framing of the eye without taking away emphasis from the upper lash line.
- Lashes can really make or break this look. I like to use full band falsies coated with lots of black mascara. After gluing on your lashes make sure when applying your mascara, the lashes are dramatic but not clumpy. If they tend to clump run a mascara brush through the lashes to take off the excess. A trick I like to do is to cut the band lashes in half and only apply the outer portion for lashes that are flirty and seductive.
Hairstyles
- The hairstyles from this period were all about the wave. Many women finger waved their hair and finished off the ends in pin curls. To achieve Veronica Lake's peek-a-boo style I like to use hot rollers. The larger the rollers the better. This look can also be done with a large barrel curling iron if you are short on time.
- Start off with a side part that works best for you. Using your roller take large 2" sections and wrap them around the roller in a horizontal position. Make sure to wrap them under as you want the hair to flow in one direction and be smooth.
- Place rollers all over your head following this horizontal position. For the hair that is near the fringe area on the side you want the peek-a-boo bangs, roll the hair forward and not down. Spray the whole set with a workable not sticky hairspray and let them set for 20-30 minutes.
- When taking out the rollers slowly unwind them in a corkscrew direction, as to not undo the large waves.
- Gently brush out the hair using a wide tooth comb, or you can use your fingers to break up the hot roller look.
- Direct the side you want to cover your eye and using a large clip or bobby pins section it where you want it to lay. At this point spray with a setting hairspray and remove the clip after a few minutes.
- Finish off the whole style with a setting hairspray and a shine spray to give the hair dimension and sheen.
