Inspiration: Michelle Obama's makeup using color for women of color

I really am inspired by Michelle Obama's makeup and hair changes since she became first lady.  I've heard a lot of rumors regarding her beauty team.  Apparently she travels with a hair and makeup artist, which I find fascinating.   Not only has her look transformed her image but it's constantly evolving which inspires me to follow some of these trends she is setting.

I'm really loving her artist's use of color for her big events.  I work with so many women of color who are scared to use bold colors on themselves.  African American women are told all the time that blush should be warm or to use a bronzer.  I've been told they don't want to look clownish which is understandable, but there is a compromise.  Bold colors can be used in a soft way that transforms your look without looking too garish.

Here are some tips to make your next makeup pop:

Try cream blushes as these blend beautifully on darker skin.  A lot of powders can tend to look ashy because of the amount of talc in the powder.  When using a cream blush, dot the littlest bit on the apples of your cheeks and blend out towards the temples with your fingers or a sponge.

Don't be afraid of pinks, even though you don't blush that color naturally.  Dusty roses, muted fushias and bold plums work great on dark skin.

When doing a bold blush don't go heavy on the lips.  Try a sheer gloss in the same color family as your blush to tie the look together.

Remember it's not always the hue of color you choose but the restraint on it's use.  Less is more and confidence with your final look will out shine even the boldest colors.
